Introduction to Pan Pastels with Lorraine Masten
Introduction to Pan Pastels - a demonstration/experiment session with Lorraine Masten
Have you heard of Pan Pastels? Local artist Lorraine Masten likes working with this medium so much that she wants to share her enthusiasm with other local artists who may be curious about using them.
Lorraine will be sharing an introduction to Pan Pastels that includes a short demonstration and access to these unique materials for participants to try them out and experiment with effects and outcomes. Pan Pastels are often combined with other media such as colored pencils.
Please note, this is NOT a class with formal instruction, but rather an opportunity to explore and experiment with a material that you may want to begin using as part of your art practice. Lorraine is generously providing Pan Pastels for the session; you do not need to bring any supplies to this session. Pan Pastels are a relatively clean medium so you are unlikely to get colors on your clothing, however they can stain clothing so please dress accordingly.
This is a donation-based session with a suggested donation amount of $10 per participant, with nobody turned away for lack of funds. Adults and youth aged 13+ welcome. We will limit the number of participants to 12, first come, first served.

Hand-Building Ceramics with Bart Godett
In this workshop we will use basic hand-building ceramics techniques to build confidence in exploring clay and its properties. Participants will have the opportunity to make one or two (depending on complexity) fairly small pots, for example a mug or a bean pot or both. You will hand-build your creation and it will be glazed for you, creating a finished ceramic piece of your own design.
All materials and equipment needed will be provided, however if you have your own clay tools you are more than welcome to bring them. This class will focus on learning about clay properties, texture, and pot creation. Finished glazed pots will be available to collect from C5 Studios 2 weeks after the class, allowing time for the work to be fired and glazed.
The cost of this workshop is inclusive of a materials fee of $10 per participant to cover the cost of the specialist materials required.
This workshop is for ages 12+.
This class is limited to 8 places.
About the Instructor:
Bart is a ceramics artist and educator that lives in Big Pine. Bart is originally from Ridgecrest and has lived in the Owens Valley for 35 years. He has a studio at his house where he has worked on pottery from very large to quite small pots. His latests interest involve heavily textured clay typically in non- round forms experimenting in shape and functionality. He has enjoyed sharing his "odd" pottery style in workshops up and down the valley. I was drawn to ceramics at 19 my first semester in college. As he has moved from place to place, he has been able to enjoy expanding his ceramics education in Lancaster, Bakersfield, Lone Pine, Incline Village. At first it was all about throwing pots on a wheel, from tiny to large. Now he enjoys his creativity while camping in the wilderness. Nature inspires.

Opening Reception - From the Ridgeline / Mattie-le Fox and Topah Spoonhunter
C5 Studios presents Mattie-le Fox and Topah Spoonhunter: From The Ridgeline
Exhibition dates: May 16 - July 5, 2025
Reception on Friday, May 16th 2025, 5.30pm - 7.30pm
C5 Studios is proud to present From The Ridgeline, a show of artwork by Owen’s Valley-based artists Mattie-le Fox and Topah Spoonhunter.
The show opens to the public on Friday, May 16, 2025 at C5 Studios Community Arts Center with a reception with the artists from 5.30pm - 7.30pm. All are welcome!
In an explosion of form and color, Fox and Spoonhunter each share artwork that provide glimpses of insight into the practices, tools and perspectives they explore and honor through their work. From the personal to the cultural, the practices we as humans choose to engage in can provide us with a sense of structure and support, offering a thread of consistency amidst the chaos of a constantly changing and shifting world.
In “Existence is a Prism”, Fox’s small, square canvases are at once understood as abstract, but with a closer look each square contained reflects a subtle but clear variation in mood and perspective the artist found herself in at the time of their creation. She describes the work as “born from the desire to make art in spite of; in spite of a very busy life, in spite of work, of motherhood, of obligations and expectations”, recognizing that as our lives progress, our access to the time and opportunity to create changes, and often becomes more limited. “I wondered, if I could put a little effort in everyday, a small practice, could that turn into something much bigger? I decided to make a color a day, every day, for a year.” Through these beautiful and captivating artworks, Fox models an approach to art-making that honors the process of creating through the cultivation of a daily practice, one day at a time.
Spoonhunter’s work echoes the recognition that art and design are powerful tools, reflecting that both “can be used to shift perspectives, change minds, and open hearts.” In a fascinating dialogue between the metaphorical and the literal, Spoonhunter sometimes chooses to use tools as objects upon which to apply painted designs and motifs. He shares that his work is influenced by many things, but one of his greatest sources of inspiration has been his culture. Spoonhunter holds the belief that tribal cultures have much to offer the world and this is often reflected in his work.

Ecstatic Dance! Freeform Dance Event
Wanna dance?
Come dance any way you want to!
Freeform dance is also known as
ecstatic dance because it is SO MUCH FUN.
This is not a class, this is an opportunity to reconnect with your beating heart through expressive movement.
Dancing lets us let go. No skill needed and all bodies welcome.
Music is magic and movement is medicine.
The Movement Studio at C5 Studios is a great open space for us to explore. Barefoot is safest, but soft shoes are okay. Your host, Ann, will do a short intro before we enter the dance space, where we can stretch and warm up to gentle music. We will provide a music set that includes oldies, Latin rhythms and a few surprises, crafted to wake up your body, build energy, and then smooth you out at the end.
Ann Mellema studied creative dance as a child, danced in community theater as a teen and performed with a tribal bellydance troupe as a grownup. She has participated in ecstatic dance groups in Boone, NC and Los Angeles.
Ann has also been caught tapping her foot to the music while waiting in line at the market.
