Hand-Building Ceramics with Bart Godett

Hand-Building Ceramics with Bart Godett

In this workshop we will use basic hand-building ceramics techniques to build confidence in exploring clay and its properties. Participants will have the opportunity to make one or two (depending on complexity) fairly small pots, for example a mug or a bean pot or both. You will hand-build your creation and it will be glazed for you, creating a finished ceramic piece of your own design.

All materials and equipment needed will be provided, however if you have your own clay tools you are more than welcome to bring them. This class will focus on learning about clay properties, texture, and pot creation. Finished glazed pots will be available to collect from C5 Studios 2 weeks after the class, allowing time for the work to be fired and glazed.

The cost of this workshop is inclusive of a materials fee of $10 per participant to cover the cost of the specialist materials required.

This workshop is for ages 12+.

This class is limited to 8 places.

About the Instructor:
Bart is a ceramics artist and educator that lives in Big Pine. Bart is originally from Ridgecrest and has lived in the Owens Valley for 35 years. He has a studio at his house where he has worked on pottery from very large to quite small pots. His latests interest involve heavily textured clay typically in non- round forms experimenting in shape and functionality. He has enjoyed sharing his "odd" pottery style in workshops up and down the valley. I was drawn to ceramics at 19 my first semester in college. As he has moved from place to place, he has been able to enjoy expanding his ceramics education in Lancaster, Bakersfield, Lone Pine, Incline Village. At first it was all about throwing pots on a wheel, from tiny to large. Now he enjoys his creativity while camping in the wilderness. Nature inspires.

Ecstatic Dance! Freeform Dance Event

        Wanna dance?
Come dance any way you want to!

Freeform dance is also known as
ecstatic dance because it is SO MUCH FUN.

This is not a class, this is an opportunity to reconnect with your beating heart through expressive movement.

Dancing lets us let go. No skill needed and all bodies welcome.

Music is magic and movement is medicine.

The Movement Studio at C5 Studios is a great open space for us to explore. Barefoot is safest, but soft shoes are okay. Your host, Ann, will do a short intro before we enter the dance space, where we can stretch and warm up to gentle music. We will provide a music set that includes oldies, Latin rhythms and a few surprises, crafted to wake up your body, build energy, and then smooth you out at the end.

Ann Mellema studied creative dance as a child, danced in community theater as a teen and performed with a tribal bellydance troupe as a grownup. She has participated in ecstatic dance groups in Boone, NC and Los Angeles.

Ann has also been caught tapping her foot to the music while waiting in line at the market.

Love Potions and Heart Medicine with Masha

Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to dive into the world of herbal love medicine. In this introductory herbalism workshop we will sample herbal aphrodisiacs and herbs with an affinity for the heart.

Herbal love medicine is not only about awakening sexuality and sensuality, but also our ability to feel connection, safety, and love. These plants can help us heal trauma, and build up the life force within us that lets us feel vibrant and passionate in our lives and relationships.

This will be a hands-on workshop with teas, tinctures, and oils to sample. The class will end with a lesson in herbal cordial making! There will be alcoholic and non-alcoholic options for cordial making.

Please register in advance so your instructor can prepare the correct amount of herbs for the class. Thank you!

About the Instructor:

Masha Bluestein has spent the past 2 years studying herbal medicine at the California School of Herbal Studies, and apprenticing with herbalist and midwife Becca Kern. While Masha enjoyed her previous life as a trailworker ballerina, her life has shifted to the path of herbalism, as it combines her passion for working outdoors with her passion for holistic healthcare. Masha is thrilled to be back in Bishop, and is ready to get this Eastern Sierra community as obsessed with growing and making their own plant medicine as she is. You can contact Masha with questions about the class at mashabluestein@gmail.com.

Bring a partner or come solo and we’ll partner-up! We will start with very basic movements which will be refined and polished with styling cues as we advance.  Each class will have a review of prior skills and a portion of the class will be dedicated to progression and combinations as folks become more comfortable with the movement.

Salsa dancing is FUN, anyone can do it with the right tricks and tools.  Your teacher is there to guide you into a hip-swiveling, smile-bringing… expression of mind, body and soul.

About your instructor:

Hallie Vickers moved to Bishop 25 years ago with a love for rock climbing and the mountains.  Several years later she moved to Santa Barbara to pursue a nursing degree… it was in Santa Barbara that she immersed herself in Salsa dancing, ultimately dancing and performing with a local Latin dance company, Salsa Barbara.  Upon returning to Bishop to settle down, she brought that love of Salsa home with her, teaching Salsa classes and fusion dance classes for many years prior to diving into family life and embracing a career as a RN Care Coordinator. She shares her journey with her handsome hubby, Simon and two fabulous boys, Shiloh and Lee. She’d love to hear from you if you have any questions 760-920-2063.

Lunar New Year Tea and Chi with Betsy

Let’s gather to celebrate the Lunar New Year that begins on the new moon of January 29, 2025 and ends with the Lantern Festival on the full moon of February 12th.

We will drink special Chinese Tea and learn some ways to meditate with tea. We’ll learn and practice some simple movements of Qigong, celebrating movement as medicine and good health. We’ll do some creative art work using the parallel verses for 2025 from Plum Village, in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. And… there will be surprise red envelopes to celebrate prosperity. Bring one little quote or poem to add to an envelope.

The Lunar New Year is known in many different countries, most notably for us as Chinese New Year and Tet in Vietnam. It will be the year of the wood snake, a time of transformation, growth, and introspection.  Let’s gather and share the intention for transformation to love, compassion, freedom, health and justice for all.

How to Hand Braid Mats with Marijke

How to Hand Braid Mats with Marijke

Join this class to learn how to upcycle all of those old t-shirts that either don’t fit, have a little stain on them, or suffer from a tiny hole. Fret no further, no need to send it to a landfill.

In this class, everyone will learn how to process old t-shirts into t-shirt yarn and create an aesthetic mat. Once everyone understands how to process their shirts, they will learn how to braid and simultaneously weave a mat. All participants are highly encouraged to bring 3-6 old t-shirts they may be needing to clear from their closet, but there will be some provided as well. The best t-shirts to bring are the ones on the thicker side.

This is a project that can be as small or as large as you would like to create it. The end result is a squishy mat that feels wonderful under your feet, could protect your table from a hot pan, or could even hang on your wall. Crafted from excess material into a charming textile.

Attend this class for an enjoyable evening of upcycling and transforming trash into treasure!

This workshop is for ages 11+.

Basic Color Theory with Acrylic Paint with Marijke

Basic Color Theory with Acrylic Paint with Marijke

Come in and brush up on your knowledge of basic color theory while we also dive into some deeper color theory topics!

In this class, we will only be breaking out the primary colors to learn how to best mix them and create our very own abstract art piece where all of the colors will be unique to your own pallet. Each participant will have the option to experiment with either the traditional painters color wheel or the pigment wheel.

I challenge all of those who attend to lose the black in your color mixing and keep the saturation at its most vibrant!

This class will start by reviewing the primary and secondary colors and then we will dive into the tertiary, analogous, and complementary colors. Once we review the basic color theory topics, we will then apply our new found knowledge to create abstract paintings that celebrate color!

By the end of this class, you will be able to ditch the unwanted brown mixture and only create it when you choose!

Want to feel more easeconfidence and clarity with your money?

Whether we like it or not, money plays a role in our lives. Taking some time to find ways to do money better just makes sense!

Join us for an interactive and judgment-free conversation about how we understand our money as we explore the questions:

How are we managing the money we earn and spend?  Are our money decisions aligned with our priorities?

This isn’t about investing or stocks and bonds. This is about what we do with the money we earn and spend every day.

Would you like to have a better relationship with your money so that you can live without credit card debt, save for a vacation, pay for your kids' hobbies, or just be able to sleep better at night knowing that all of your bills are paid?  We will learn what it means to do money better: Why it matters and the practical steps to get started.  Join us for this 6 week course!

During this course you will:

  • Learn and implement a straight-forward method to work with the money you have and create your own spending plan/budget.

  • Have 6 30-minute one-on-one sessions with me via Zoom to go over your unique money situation and customize your spending plan to you and your life.

  • Enjoy community support – just like going to the gym, some things are harder to do on your own!

  • Learn together in community and talk about money in ways that are usually “taboo” (but don't worry…you don’t need to share any personal financial details in order to gain from these conversations!)

  • Make a commitment, put in the effort, have fun and learn valuable tools that will serve you the rest of your life!

More details:

  • You will need a laptop, smartphone or tablet.

  • You’ll enjoy 3 months of YNAB (A Spendfulness App) for free. This is what we will use to create your spending plan.

  • Pay what you can: $160, $180 or $200 for all 6 sessions.

  • Please plan on attending each of the 6 sessions as they build on each other.
