Expanding the Shape with Nōtan - A Study on Positive and Negative Space with Marijke

Nōtan is a Japanese art form that focuses on the way positive and negative spaces play off of one another. There are many ways to apply positive and negative space in a work of art, but here we will be focusing on using black and white paper to achieve this.

First, we will discuss how to design your piece to fit into your shape and everyone will be able to decide if they would like to create an abstract work or a realistic one. Participants will then be able to go off on their own creative journey and expand their shape for their very own Nōtan work of art.

Join this class and leave with your piece, plus a deeper understanding of positive and negative space for your artist toolbox!

This workshop is for ages 10/11+.
