Risky Play and Children

A Workshop for Parents, Teachers and Carers with Erin Boehme

Saturday, February 29th, 2020 - 9.30am - 12pm

Over the past 60 years we have witnessed, in our culture, a continuous, gradual, but ultimately dramatic decline in children’s opportunities to play freely, without adult control, and especially in their opportunities to play in risky ways.  Over the same 60 years we have also witnessed a continuous, gradual, but ultimately dramatic increase in all sorts of childhood mental disorders, especially emotional disorders.
— Peter Gray

Join this workshop to understand the importance of true free play and how we can shift the way children are supported to grow in a healthy, balanced environment.

We will be engaging in an informative and solution-based discussion on:

  • The parent/teacher’s role when children engage in risky play

  • The 6 Categories of Risky Play

  • How Risky Play benefits children and human development

  • Movies, media, violence and gun play in a child's life

  • How to support and advocate for children through free play, nature connection and tending your own energy

Erin Boehme is director of Wild Roots Forest School Eastern Sierra, early childhood educator/parent support for 23 years, nature connection mentor for teachers, parents and children.
