Hand-Building Ceramics

A ceramics workshop with Bart Godett

This is a two-part workshop and registrants should plan to attend both sessions:

Saturday January 14th, 2023 - 10.30am - 1pm

Saturday, January 21st, 2023 - 10.30am - 1pm

In this workshop we will use basic hand-building ceramics techniques to build confidence in exploring clay and its properties. Participants will have the opportunity to make one or two (depending on complexity) fairly small pots, for example a mug or a bean pot or both. You will hand-build your creation and glaze it, creating a finished ceramic piece of your own design.

All materials and equipment needed will be provided, however if you have your own clay tools you are more than welcome to bring them. Due to the requirement for drying and firing clay work between sessions this is a 3-part workshop. The first class will be learning about clay properties, texture, and pot creation. The second class (one week later) will be for glazing our creations. Finished glazed pots will be available to collect from C5 Studios 1-2 weeks after the final class, allowing time for the work to be fired a second time following glazing.

Due to the specialist materials required for this workshop there is a materials fee of $10 per participant in addition to the registration fee that must be brought on the first day of the workshop.

This workshop is for ages 12+.

About the Instructor:
Bart is a ceramics artist and educator that lives in Big Pine. Bart is originally from Ridgecrest and has lived in the Owens Valley for 35 years. He has a studio at his house where he has worked on pottery from very large to quite small pots. His latests interest involve heavily textured clay typically in non- round forms experimenting in shape and functionality. He has enjoyed sharing his "odd" pottery style in workshops up and down the valley. I was drawn to ceramics at 19 my first semester in college. As he has moved from place to place, he has been able to enjoy expanding his ceramics education in Lancaster, Bakersfield, Lone Pine, Incline Village. At first it was all about throwing pots on a wheel, from tiny to large. Now he enjoys his creativity while camping in the wilderness. Nature inspires.
