Color Workshop 2- Exploring Color Values and Mixing Muted and Neutral Colors

A painting workshop with Ana Budnyk

Wednesday October 26th, 2022 - 5.45pm - 7.45pm

THIS CLASS IS NOW SOLD OUT TO CAPACITY

In this workshop, we will play with different color values and hues. Each color has its inherent value on a value scale, and we will learn how to identify color values and develop your eye to make nuanced value distinctions. We will further deepen our knowledge of color mixing by playing with the category of the most desaturated colors, called Chromatic Grays (often referred to as neutrals, for example, skin colors). We will make a painted-paper collage using color shapes using broad hues and value ranges. This class will give you more confidence in mixing paint and inspiration to experiment further in your projects.

In the course, we use gouache paint and dive into archival collage methods, paving the way for future explorations. An in-depth color theory presentation will be offered in the class with examples from early mid-century color theorists like Johannes Itten and Joseph Albers.

You will learn:

  • Relationships between complementary colors and how to mix muted colors

  • Ways of mixing chromatic grays (neutrals)

  • Develop your neutral color palette

  • Develop chromatic gray study collages

This workshop is designed for:

  • People who have a general curiosity about color, fine artists, photographers, chefs, textile artists, and others

  • People with no experience in color and those who know about color and/or color mixing will be equally engaged in the learning and discussion

  • Attendance at Color Workshop 1 is not required

Workshop materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your brushes, paints, and paper to get more familiarity with your materials.

*Each class is currently capped at 10 people, and we offer two free spots per class to people with financial needs. Please reach out to us at contact@c5studios.org to request your scholarship spot.

This workshop is for adults and young people aged 15+.
