Beginning Watercolor: Celebrating Women Artists

A watercolor workshop with Monika Metzenthin

Wednesday March 27th, 2024 - 5:30pm-7:30pm

In honor of Women’s History Month, join us for a engaging watercolor workshop where we pay tribute to some of our favorite female artists. From the iconic Georgia O’Keeffe to the recently discovered abstract innovator Hilma af Klint, and the contemporary expressive painter Cecily Brown. We will draw inspiration from their works as we embark on our own artistic explorations.

What to expect:

  • Study Works of Artists: Throughout the workshop we will closely examine the compositions of the artists. From O’Keeffe’s iconic florals to af Klint’s enigmatic abstractions and Browns expressive brushstrokes, we will work from images of their artworks to understand their basic structures and techniques.

  • Explore Watercolor Techniques: Guided by our experienced instructor, Teaching Artist Monika Metzenthin, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment with a range of watercolor techniques. From mastering the basics to exploring wet-in-wet techniques, salt effects, dabbing, lifting, masking, and glazing, you’ll gain valuable skills to enhance your artistic practice.

  • Be Inspired by and Make It Your Own: Using images of these influential artists’ work as references, alongside your own photos if desired, you’ll have the freedom to interpret and reinterpret their compositions in your own personal style. Whether you’re drawn to the bold shapes of O’Keefe’s landscapes, the geometric mysteries of af Klint’s paintings, or the expressive energy of Brown’s art, this workshop invites you to find your own voice.

  • Play with Colors: With watercolor as our medium, we will explore the endless possibilities of color. From delicate washes to vibrant hues, you will learn how to mix and manipulate colors to convey mood, atmosphere, and emotion in your artwork.

This class is for adults and young folk aged 12+.
